About this episode
Jes Staley was not simply Jeffrey Epstein’s senior contact inside JPMorgan; bank records show that he was also closely tied to Ghislaine Maxwell’s relationship with the institution. Staley became the most senior JPMorgan executive responsible for Epstein’s relationship with the private bank, with former executives describing Epstein as effectively “Jes Staley’s client.” Internal records concerning Maxwell likewise placed Staley directly in her banking history: a 2013 reputation-risk document stated that Maxwell had originally been referred to the private bank by Staley, while other due-diligence records described her as an Epstein referral who had met with Staley around 2003. By 2005, records show Staley was involved in bringing Maxwell into the private-bank operation, meaning the same senior executive who cultivated Epstein’s enormously valuable relationship with JPMorgan was also connected to the banking relationship of the woman who would later be convicted of helping Epstein sexually exploit minors. That overlap becomes far harder to dismiss when viewed alongside the financial relationship between Epstein and Maxwell. Court records showed that JPMorgan processed more than $25 million in payments from Epstein-controlled accounts to Maxwell between 1999 and 2006, while Maxwell held authority jointly with Epstein on several accounts and remained a JPMorgan client even as allegations about her role in recruiting girls for Epstein became public. Meanwhile, Staley maintained an extraordinarily close relationship with Epstein, exchanging roughly 1,200 emails with him between 2008 and 2012, visiting his properties and continuing communications even after Epstein’s conviction. JPMorgan later tried to place substantial responsibility for the Epstein relationship on Staley, but the larger record showed an institutional failure extending well beyond one banker. Still, Staley occupied a remarkable position at the center of it: Epstein had his senior champion inside JPMorgan, and Maxwell’s own banking relationship ran through the same private-bank world and, according to JPMorgan’s records, through Staley himself. to contact me: [email protected]
