About this episode

In 2020, U.S. federal prosecutors investigating Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell formally sought the United Kingdom’s help in obtaining testimony from Prince Andrew through a Mutual Legal Assistance request, or MLA. The request was a significant escalation from the public back-and-forth over whether Andrew was voluntarily cooperating, because an MLA is an official government-to-government mechanism used to obtain evidence, testimony or other assistance in a criminal investigation. U.S. authorities had already said publicly that Andrew had not meaningfully cooperated despite his earlier statements that he was willing to help investigators. By turning to the formal mutual legal assistance process, prosecutors were signaling that they wanted to move beyond informal requests and use the legal channels available between the United States and Britain to question him about what he knew of Epstein’s activities and his own relationship with him. The MLA request also underscored how important Andrew had become to the wider Epstein investigation, particularly because of his long association with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell and the allegations made by Virginia Giuffre. Andrew denied wrongdoing and disputed Giuffre’s account, but prosecutors still wanted to hear directly from him as a witness. The request became another source of tension because Andrew’s legal team insisted he had offered cooperation, while U.S. prosecutors maintained that he had not provided the assistance they were seeking. In practical terms, the MLA request showed that American authorities considered Andrew’s testimony potentially relevant enough to invoke formal international legal procedures rather than simply continue asking him to sit for an interview voluntarily. to contact me: bobbycapucci@protonmail.com
