Bryan Kohberger has never publicly explained why he murdered University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. By pleading guilty in July 2025, he avoided both the death penalty and a trial that might have exposed more evidence about his motive. Prosecutors said they found no proof of a sexual assault or a direct relationship between Kohberger and the victims, although his phone had connected to a cellular tower serving the area near their Moscow home
